Major characters from the story. Almost exclusively anthropomorphic animals. See the general characters page for more info.
Lynn and her long-time friends. The four guys the story starts out with.
Ethylene Petra, (Lynn for short,) a gray tabby cat with yellow eyes. Around 21 years old, and below average adult woman height. Wears the clothes at the bottom of your laundry pile.
Her three brothers all acknowledge her authority as the Oldest Sibling. Friend of Nick, Oatmeal, and Ed since childhood. Loves looking through old books and sites and articles looking for supernatural events.
Same person as Puddles due to story reasons (she finds the paranormal stuff she was looking for and it does NOT go well.)
Red squirrel. Either a year older or younger that Lynn, but shorter than her either way. Wears clothes one step warmer than the weather would usually call for.
The only one of these guys Lynn met in-person, instead of over the internet. Laid-back, jokester, knows all the nicest views in town, likes to climb trees and buildings. He and Lynn have probably climbed some buildings they weren't legally supposed to.
Phoenix Ashton, rabbit. Probably at least 18 years old. Maybe a little taller than Lynn.
Generally grumpy, or at least doesn't express joy very clearly. He loves his friends though, and spends a lot of his time talking to them, especially Oatmeal.
I'm not fully decided on a lot of his story. My current idea is that he's (partially) a robot and spends most of his childhood locked in his father's basement.
Oatmeal Sandmoore, (sometimes Oats for short,) sheep. Around 20 years old, tallest in the friend group. Sheep farmer who farms sheep.
A cheerful girl who lives with her family in South Dakota. Loves animals and the outdoors, runs a blog that at least 2 people follow where she posts photos of the sheep.
The characters important in the second book.
A ghost posessing a small volume of fresh water, usually shaped like a small cat wearing a large poncho of flowing water.
Same person as Lynn. He retains her personality, but none of her memories, so he's very protective and wants to help with everything, but often can't do much.
Side note about me calling him a "he": I have no idea what pronouns to use for this guy at this point. Originally I made Puddles and Lynn as different, completely unrelated characters, so I wasn't expecting this to be an issue. The current theory is that one of the other characters calls him "he" at one point and (having no biological sex or memory of having one,) he doesn't know enough to dispute it, so it sticks. I think "she" would be the most accurate, but I'll just keep calling him a "he" for now.
Has a number of cool ghost powers: he can posess fresh water and is invulnerable to physical harm, but he also has a general water manipulation power, (which starts off weak and limited to fresh water too, but over the course of the story becomes very strong and precice, and can eventually affect anything with a substantial amount of water in it,) plus his speech and hearing transcend language barriers.
Beetle person with a red carapace. No more than 17 years old, taller than Mattie but only by his horns.
Generally relaxed, even when hunting (which, on Porta, is more like brutally fighting.) Becomes friends with Puddles shortly after he shows up. They explore the island and hunt creatures together, even though Puddles is incapable of eating.
His kind are native to Porta and only speak, oddly enough, Latin. Also his design has been changed a lot and I always wind up not liking it.
Red-haired human woman. Something like 18-25 years old. Wears cheap, damaged clothes. I don't have any particular ideas about her height so let's just say average.
Came to Porta from the mainland one day. Basically quietly terrified of everything there.
Story isn't set in stone but basically she goes to Porta because she's got Problems and then joins up with Puddles and Mike to try and survive better. Well, actually, Mike doesn't need her help, and she think she's deserving of their help, so it's mostly Puddles who convinces them to team up.
Rat boy. 16 years old. Remarkably shorter than Mike. Wears torn-up survival gear. Left eye is all black with glowy purple pupil, or covered by an eyepatch, depending on the point in the story.
Antagonizes Puddles and his friends during the first part of the story, due to magical influence on his mind (the purple glowy eye.) Eventually, Puddles winds up violently removing that influence and he becomes friends with them.
I haven't fleshed out his personality yet but I suppose he acts pretty henchman-like while under the brain magic, and afterwards like a normal teenager who's just thankful to not be under the brain magic. In both cases he's not an experienced wilderness survivor and is constantly terrified by the island.
Large gray wolf with amber eyes. Middle-aged. 6' something" tall. I haven't designed his outfit but I imagine it'd be what a 21st-century evil wizard would wear. Because he's an evil wizard.
The big bad guy of the second book. He's been putting magical influence on peoples minds using the same kind of magic Lynn used. Sent Germ to Porta to look for a secret thing he needs for his evil wizard plans.
Cold and quiet. Ultimately believes he can and should control everyone and conquer everything. Typical bad guy stuff.
